Syntheri Rocks at Dandeli, Western Ghats

Naturalist, Photographer, Traveller, Trekker, Wildlife and Bird enthusiast... well, these are just some of the many adjectives that describe my honorable guest blogger for today - Santosh BS, from Huchchara Santhe. A self confessed 'Jungle Man', he appropriately spends most of his weekends at lakes, zoos, hills, bird watching sessions or any forest patch in and around Bangalore that he can lay his foot on looking out for those elusive birds or other obscure creatures and introduces them to all through his crisp write-ups and breathtaking photography. On my recent trip to Dandeli in the Western Ghats, we finally made time to visit 'Syntheri Rocks' – a geologist’s place and a tourist spot.

A monolithic single granite stone with a height of 300ft with the river Kaneri flowing at its base, it’s a huge, massive limestone rock formed due to volcanic eruptions some zillion (how many is your wild guess!) years ago. It is named after an English lady called Ms. Cinthera who is believed to have discovered this place in the 20th century. A flight of 200 odd steps downwards lead you to the base where the river flows and you get to see a giant rock formation from the bottom.

There are numerous caves within and its not accessible hitherto you have special permission from the department to study and explore which is very unlikely.

It’s tall, wide and mesmerizing to say the least, wonder how they were created! Added to this there are numerous and numerous bee hives here and flocks of pigeons and smaller birds reside in the deep holes of the caves unseen to us. Being a tourist centre has its own disadvantages and as Syntheri Rocks is located close to the temple town of Ulavi, hordes of people visit this place on their way to and fro from Ulavi. When the annual fest (or jathre as we call it) happens at Ulavi, this place literally becomes a picnicker’s paradise with people and vehicles everywhere messing it up completely, sad but true is the case, as with other tourist spots.

But, the forest department is doing its bit in maintaining this place by putting up warning signboards and posting guards to not allow people getting into the river as the flow is heavy and with strong currents pose a threat.

The entrance to the area is from the main road with a nominal entry fees charged and the smaller vehicles are let into up to the designated parking area from where you need to climb down the steps to reach the base. The distance from the entry to the parking lot is easily more than a km and its midst of bamboo plantations, some old, some new and here is where you get the forest feel. Wish entry of vehicles is completely banned inside so that people walk from the entrance leaving their polluting vehicles outside which may deter in few people not visiting due to the walking...

The steps are big and nicely placed and railings on each side do not allow you to wander. Along the side, small concrete towers are erected and on each tower you get to see different kinds of sample rocks cemented with useful information provided on each of them as to what they are and what they constitute of – a true geologist’s paradise. But sad to see the sorry state of affairs of the towers – some of them missing, some with moss growth and some defaced. I would love to see some more boards depicting the importance of this place and providing more information to the visitors. Still, the place exudes a charm that’s successful in hordes of people visiting here and this place is similar to Yana and Kavala caves.

We were quite pleased to have visited this place that often went unvisited on our multiple trips to areas around Dandeli.

Location: Dandeli-Ulavi highway.
Distance: 30 odd kms from Dandeli.
Transport: Local jeeps on hire/sharing are the best bet.
Food: None.
Time: 9am to 6pm if I’m not wrong (forgot to confirm this)!

First Time Travel Tips for India

India induces a sense of adventure the moment one thinks of the country! A backpacking destination for the youngsters, a spiritual journey for others, or just a place brimming with intrigue, the country caters to a wide assortment of travelers. Even though it can be overwhelming for first timers, one must know that there exists an order of sorts in the chaos! The sights, smells and sounds may appear daunting at first, but one must know that there is going to be no dearth in excitement and introduction to a variety of culture!

Here are a few insights into subjects that seem to emerge as matter of concern –

1. Visas:

If you are going to be in India as a traveler, this is something which should be sorted out at the beginning of your travel. However, if you are extending your stay, the rules have been changing over the years. Have a look at the freshest details on http://india.gov.in/overseas/passport/passport.php.

2. Delhi –Belly:

Tummy rumblings are something that most first timers suffer from! Not only the street food but fare from top restaurants can cause a mean Delhi-Belly! This is just the difference in composition of food – most Indian foods can be heavy.

The tip you must keep in mind is not to eat raw food, especially from the streets! Also, help your stomach acclimatise for a few days. Try the Indian food gradually. Ask for lesser spices and chillies till you are a veteran. Pharmacies are available easily, so if you run out of your own medicines, a suitable substitute can be made available!

3. Water:

Water is certainly an easy carrier of germs, so stick to mineral water bottles or boiled water! Water purifying tablets are also a good idea, especially for trekkers who might to re-fill at streams!

4. Transportation:

Public transportation can be overwhelming for many as most international travelers are not accustomed to crowds that large in number. Also, the concept of queuing up in order is not something one should expect.

Else, access to cabs and auto rickshaws is easy depending on the distance and your budget. Trains are a great way of seeing the Indian cultural and physical topography!

5. Single Women Travel:

The nervousness around single women travel seems to be ebbing away quickly! The foremost reason being, that locals are no more intrigued by the idea. You may still have to manoeuvre past intrusive questions but this also helps in striking a conversation. Use your discretion while interacting with people. Avoiding traveling by public transports or walking at night are rules that one would follow anywhere around the world – that applies in India as well. Try and stay at homestays in smaller towns, rather than hotels as your hosts can offer large amount of security and help!

6. Money Exchange:

With an exception to really small towns, access to ATMs and international banks is quite easy. Most places also accept MasterCard and Visa credit cards. Carry a reasonable amount of cash and then withdraw regularly. For long stay travelers, getting a bank account is close to impossible. Ensure that Indian friends can help you with online bookings etc so you can pay them in cash.

7. Ear Relief:

The noise on the streets is something that many travelers cannot seem to fathom. Also, there is generally low regard for personal space and people are quite loud in public places. If traveling alone and you want some alone time, rely on a good set of ear-phones! This will also help to fall asleep in overnight trains and buses!

8. First Aid/ Medical Emergencies:

One must carry a non-bulky first aid kit but for more elaborate medical health, good hospitals are available easily in the large cities. If you are visiting a small town, make your way to the closest city and then seek medical help.

9. Travelling with Children:

Children, in most cases, adapt easily and are spontaneous and not cynical in having fun.

Do not fret about their safety or handling new food and culture! Stick to mineral water and non-spicy food and they should do well. They might be subjected to some amount of cheek-pulling and fascination in public places – be firm but polite to avert this!

10. Public Bathrooms:

A most distressing topic, this is something that India has not been able to cater well! If you are close to a coffee shop or a hotel, ask to be let in or grab a small bite to use the bathroom. Public loos can be in dismal conditions! Carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer at all times. If trekking or traveling on the road for long, using the bushes is highly recommended!

It’s been just a few days since we stepped into 2012 and the year has already begin to shower it’s benevolence on me. As I opened my eyes into the New year, I found myself reveling in two moments of happiness and delight as a blogger and I thought of sharing them with all of you.

Here they go--

1. My Yatra Diary… Reviewed!

We have all heard of books being reviewed, there are movies and television soaps being reviewed too but a blog, that too, by a blogger at his/her blog?!

Yes, it's being done by The Fool @ his blog Lucifer House Inc. And when I came to know of this opportunity to get my little diary reviewed by one of the most promising and fair reviewers in the blogosphere, I grabbed it with both hands.

This was special for me because besides being something completely new, it was also being done with a genuine intention and with utmost honesty. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to The Fool for taking the time out to review my diary and wish him all the success in this noble gesture of his.

Presented below is a small excerpt of his analysis –

Yātrā, in Hinduism and other Indian religions, generally means pilgrimage to holy places such as confluences of sacred rivers, places associated with Hindu epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana, and other sacred pilgrimage sites. And My Yatra Diary is Arti’s record of her visits to places of pilgrimage in India.

Thus, with an encouraging review and a beautiful feeling in my pocket, I step in the New Year with a silent prayer to the Almighty to continue making it good for me and for all of us here and bless us all with a fruitful year ahead.

Today, as I write this last post in the Char Dham series... I feel happy, content and a bit tired too, a feeling quite akin to the feeling that we get on our arrival from a long journey back home.

It's been close to seven months since I started penning The Char Dham yatra here. When I had started out, I had never imagined it to go this long. But then the place had so much to explore, so much to discover, so much on offer and so much to take back that I really cannot be blamed. I wanted to document most, if not all, of what I had seen, what I had experienced, what I had come across... in detail... I had wanted to relive an entire experience... And today, I cannot really say which out of the two, the real and the virtual one, has been more fulfilling for me.

Thank you very much for accompanying me here and making it just as memorable as the real one! I have enjoyed every moment spent with you and I do hope to have your company in my future yatras as well :)

After photographic memories of Waterfalls, Snow, Trees, Faith, Roads and River Ganga; here are some more that I can remember sorted a bit randomly this time.

1. Dhabas

While traveling in the hilly himalayan regions, over-stuffing yourself with food is a big no-no but skipping meals altogether is never an alternative either. This is where small shacks like these sprayed intermittently all across the routes are a boon, providing a lot of relief to the hungry traveler.

Devoid of any names or luxuries, these kinky roadside shacks or dhabas serve you with fresh and tasty food at real cheap prices. And the best part of it all, is that you can actually peep into their kitchens and watch all the cooking live while pampering your taste buds at the same time; and believe me this really does spice up the entire experience!

2. Haathi Pahad

Not as mythical as the Nar Narayan mountains, but equally fascinating nevertheless.

3. Over Steaming Tea/Coffee

Sipped on a lot of them throughout the journey wherever I found them.

If you are my kind, who is not very accepting to shivers and quivers, then don’t miss your cuppa whenever you spot one. Will surely leave your tongue warm and prepare your body to take on the icy chills!

4. Sadhus and Sages

Orange clad, saffron robed men are everywhere, not only in the pilgrim towns of the Char Dham circuit but also enroute, on the highways and on the roadways! Many of the sages walk the entire way up to the hills from the plains on foot, basically doing the entire pilgrimage as a ‘padyatra’ meaning ‘pilgrimage on foot’.

These ascetics leave the plains, making their way forward by camping over several days probably even months, to reach their destination. After completion of their padyatra, some of them decide to stay put for meditation in the upper reaches of the Himalayas while the rest of the pilgrim town is shutting down activity for 6 months of the year!

When planning a trip to the Himalayas, one of the major concerns that plays in the mind of the traveler is the ‘Condition of the Roads’. Road conditions can easily make or mar your trip depending on their moods. Smooth, rough, rocky or bumpy – you are sure to get a taste of all of it as you keep moving along. So no matter, how hard you try to plan around it, the unpredictability of the Himalayan roads is something that, can be said, is best left to the Gods!

Based on our experience, here’s what you can expect, the next time you plan a trip to the hills!

Tossing, jolting and bumping you - these rutted, uneven and narrow routes not scare only you on your way, but your near and dear ones back home too.

These can hold you up for days but if your stars are bright, then chances are that you might get away with just a few hrs delay by taking a different route to reach your destination.

Today, if the Char Dham Yatra is no longer seen as being nightmarish or terrifying, then a major credit of it goes to the dedication and laborious efforts of some hardworking people like these - The BRO (Border Roads Organization) employees. May God bless these noble souls who work tirelessly so that people like us can keep our appointments with the Lords and travel safe. Hats off to them!

Smooth Moments of Terrain:

Roads are not always rough and rocky as shown above, or in TV programs or even in guidebooks. It does have its moments of calm and quiet. Passing through sparsely inhabited valleys, idyllic habitations and silent remoteness, these sure take you into a world unknown... a beautiful world full of Himalayan wilderness.

There is something so exhilarating and thrilling when you travel through the middle of a town as historic, significant and gorgeous as the Char Dhams;

Yet, even as time continues to become an even more luxurious entity and moments continue to slip by like sand particles in an hour glass, there are some days that always remain special... days that compel you to pause and ponder... days that coerce you to leave everything and embark on a enthralling journey of yore...

21 Nov 2011... was one such day in my diary that I would love to bookmark. It marks the day I had, for the very first time, put pen on the first page of my diary...

Thus, I take this opportunity to turn back a few pages, and thank all those who have been with me and for me in this beautiful journey of my blogging life...

My First Readers – Sushma Mallya, Rachana and ...Petty Witter. I remember how I used to eagerly await their comments after publishing each post of mine. They never let a single post go by without their words of encouragement and each time they did I literally jumped with joy! And I still do! I am fortunate to come across them very early in my blogging life for through them I learnt a lot about blogging and commenting conduct and etiquette...

The MasterChefs – Aipi, Satya (a great devotee of Krishna, through her I learnt the meaning of the phrase ‘genuine follower’), Ushnish da (a very senior travel blogger too!), Rachana and Sushma too.

A Wonderfully Well Knit Travel Community – Slowly, I became acquainted with a magnificent group of travel bloggers and fell in love with them. Anu (I was in complete awe of her writings from day one!), chitra (my silent inspiration), Santosh BS (a very warm and affable travel blogger), Sridharan (a regular commentator despite being an irregular blogger himself), Team G square (one of the shortest commentators but one among the most meaningful ones), Rajesh Prabhu (despite being so popular, I always saw him as a very humble human being), Srinidhi Hande, Umesh Derebail (has a range of blogs on diverse topics! I always wonder how he handles so many blogs so efficiently), P N Subramanium, Nisha, Arun, Indrani - all of them are different and unique, all inspirational, and admirable, highly supportive of one another, and they all have fabulous blogs... I learnt something new from each of them and continue to do so with each passing day... I feel very very proud to be one amongst them!

Talented Artists – Martina (I don’t remember if ever there was a day when I left her blog without a smile on my face), Lady Fi (One blogger who never fails to leave me speechless), Sylvia (visit her anytime and I am sure to brighten up my day)

Travelling Japan – Snowwhite, sarah, Red Rose, Barb, stardust, cosmos, cocomino - (Though I have never been outside India but somehow I feel I have visited this part of the world, thanks to all of them!)

Meeting other Bloggers who joined in the convoy as the journey kept moving – Ginny (always curious to know more... I thank her and Petty Witter for their questions. Many a times, I have had to consult my elders to find the answers to them and they have been very instrumental in increasing my knowledge too), Karthick S (another of my very early followers who has stuck with this diary for long), Abhishek Bharadwaj, Kavita Saharia, Cloud Nine, sm, Purple Pooch Reign, Sallie (Full Time Life), Angeli (we share the same birth date!), Agnes, Farmchick, Magda, Margaret cloud, Scott, Rizalenio, Mark Weins, Here I am/ Carrie, Draffin Bears, gigihawaii, Mareta Kusumaningram, Nancy @ A Rural Journal, Ms Becky, Rahul Bhatia, Rakesh Kumar, Krishna , Purvi... I don't know how to describe each one of them but all I can say that each of their blogs is simply beautiful!

IndiBlogger – A wonderfully warm, welcoming and a very friendly community… it has been a huge pillar in my making… IT has given me an identity…

So let me just say the entire community has been too loving and caring for me and a great source of strength in this yatra of mine!

Last but not the least, My Family – Although you sometimes feel you can do it very well all alone, but deep inside you know that you do need them…

My Father (he calls himself a huge fan of this diary… I guess that’s a father’s way of encouraging his beloved daughter), My Mother (not an avid reader of the diary, still never leaves an opportunity to say about it in the town) and finally, My Brother (my biggest motivator and my biggest critic... if not for him, there wouldn’t have been this Yatra Diary...)

Miss You Ma...

Recently during Deepawali, I was faced with the herculean task of cleaning my messy cupboard. Inside it were bundles of papers, books, novels, and other stationary, jutting and jostling for space and asking for some urgent breather. But what I anticipated to be a tedious and a boring activity actually turned out to be quite delightful and enjoyable in the end.

As I started to put things in order, I lay my hands on a small folder containing a few hand written letters, personal cards, greeting cards and scribbled postcards. Some of these were notes from my school friends and postcards from people I had met in my travels but majority of them contained conversations between me and my mother. I reminisced those times when we both shared this rather cute bond of hand written cards and letters...

A collection of beautiful memories...

I think it had all started out with her. She loved to attach a personal touch to everything she did and highly valued the joy of connecting to others via the old-fashioned art of personal correspondence. In such a scenario then, the chances of me inheriting this quality from her among many others was very high, almost inevitable. As I grew up in her arms, it did not take much time for me to realize how magical this ‘personal touch’ was and before I knew, I was completely enchanted by its spell...

As a small kid, I developed a deep affectionate fascination for letters, notes and cards - all handwritten! I still remember how I loved writing them. I just needed an opportunity – birthdays, anniversaries, even moments of fights – I always rushed for a pen and paper and not only did it work but somehow always worked best! I remember those times when I would misbehave and she would stop talking to me; I would compose a small verse asking forgiveness and place it delicately in one of her kitchen shelves. Then at night, in the midst of my moments of sleep, a warm hug would envelop my body. And the day of her birthday... that thrill of gifting ‘my card’ to her and the joy of watching her radiant smile beam when she would hold it in her hands... And how could I forget that ‘I Love You’ letter that I had written to her on Mother’s day... Ah... Memories!

One of my Apology letters, I think I was in 6th std then...

Cards, letters, and poems - they were all there... Oh, when and how I had forgotten about them...?! Soon enough, I found myself buried in a heap of memories, going through the scribblings, chuckling to myself, getting reflective over some, while finding others quite childish. I ended up spending the whole afternoon rummaging through the letters that had gathered dust over time and found utmost joy in wiping them off. These letters bought back so many bitter sweet recollections and I patted myself hard for having preserved them over the years.

All of a sudden, I could recollect the joys of writing on a neat piece of paper. I felt really sad that it had been ages since I did that. I wondered why?

As I grew older, in the winds of change amidst project deadlines, work pressures and hectic schedules, this love of mine drifted away from me and we both got lost in the wave of technological advancement. Text messages, emails and skype made an appearance and I was completely hooked. And why not, after all this mode of communication was so much faster, pacier, convenient and above all saved a lot of time. But intimate and personal? Just think about it... Still, that’s what I always end up doing now... sms, mail or better still chatting on phone... the reason? Time... or should I say, the lack of it!

A letter to the most special person in my life...

As I am posting this right now, my mom sits far away from me, in Gujarat while I write this in Mumbai. I talk to her daily – two times, three times or may be even more! Still, it is not enough, it never can be... I know how much I miss her... We still have our moments of fights and angers, her birthdays and anniversaries still come and go... But I can’t remember when was the last time I gifted her a hand made card or took the trouble to write something personal to her... I am sure, even now she will enjoy it as much as she used to then but... I... I... have no time today as I have completely submitted myself to the mercy of the razor-sharp claws of technology...

A few days back, a question at IndiBlogger - If you had 2 extra hrs in a day, how would you spend it? ... got me thinking...

Spend it with nature, with myself, watch TV,

hang out with friends, dream…

...what else could I do..?

Umm... naaah... I think I knew a better way to utilize it...

I would switch off my cellphone, turn off my PC, sit down with a warm cup of coffee, and write my mom something. For I think, it’s been quite a while since I did that and more so because I know it will be bringing a wide smile onto the face of someone very close and special...

Day 5 : Neelkanth Peak - Hanuman Chatti Temple - Exploring Joshimath - Enroute to Rishikesh (Joshimath to Srinagar) - Rishikesh Swami Dayananda Ashram - Haridwar (Where to Stay, Eat, Markets) - HAR KI PAURI GHAT, HARIDWAR (CHAR DHAM TRIP CONCLUDES FINALLY...)

What better place there can be to conclude our Char Dham Yatra - virtually or otherwise – than at the feet of the Lord Himself…?

Yes, the final few minutes of the Char Dham Yatra of ours, saw us at the Har ki Pauri Ghat – the most venerated spot in the holy town of Haridwar. Literally, it means Lord Vishnu's (Har Ki) footsteps (Paudi), but it is today synonymous with the prolific event of Kumbh Mela, (that takes place four times every 12 years at 4 different sites, Haridwar being one of them) and for the highly enthralling evening Ganga Arti that holds the charm to captivate thousands of pilgrims from all over the world.

This highly prestigious event of Haridwar or Ganga arti was the one thing I was very much craving to attend. Add to it the fact that I had already been eluded by it twice before, in Varanasi and Allahabad, only made matters worse by increasing my yearnings even more. Even this time around, the situation being a bit dicey with the timings of our train departure (8.00 PM) and the Ganga Arti (6.45 PM) clashing with one another, our attending the event was highly dubious and a final call on the same was going to be a real time decision only…

5:30 PM - At about half past five in the evening, crowds have already begun to gather. Steps are being occupied thick and fast by devotees pouring in from all corners of the town. Priests sit on raised wooden planks calling out to pilgrims to perform various pujas for the well being of their family and near and dear ones.

By and large, all the groups assembled at the steps maintain a very peaceful atmosphere.

The ghats, in contrast, are abuzz with activity.

Many can be seen splashing water onto their faces and heads, while others are busy floating leaf diyas (candles) in Her waters and some just find content by standing transfixed with hands folded and heads bowed down in prayer.

Wiggling my way through the swarm, I reach Her shores and kneel down. I lower my hands in the cold yet comforting waters and feel the sense of Her soothing touch deftly caress the tip of my hands. Tiny ripples tumble gently over giving me a strange feeling of kinship possibly developed from our coupled travels so far. Young and bubbly in Gangotri, soft in Harsil, considerably mellowed in Rishikesh and now here… In a split second, Her various avatars from days gone by flash in front of me taking me back into a nostalgic journey but before I can dive deep, Her whooshing sound wakes me up bringing me back to reality and reminding me to take pleasure in the moment as this is to be our last summit together… and while She is an eternal traveler with a long road ahead of her, mine is soon to end. I have to now head back home…

By the time, I climb back again, the sun is all set kissing the horizon and the steps are fully occupied. The chit-chatter amongst the crowd has risen substantially and so has the anticipation for the Ganga arti to commence.

I take a vantage point somewhere and spend a few quiet moments in retrospection. The bells, the temples, the waters, the devotion, the faith, all the elements in the atmosphere work in unison to nourish the mind, body and soul.

Spend a few solitary moments with the Mother before parting...

Men in blue uniforms roam around asking for donations, the proceeds from which shall purportedly go towards the Ganga arti. Lights have come on and the river is twinkling with reflections, curious eyes are everywhere. The prayers should begin in any time now.

6.45 PM - The arti still hasn’t begun. But we have a train to catch and can’t wait any further... We need to track back and take leave.

Bidding Adieu..

As we make our way back through the markets towards our car for the Haridwar station, strikingly loud chants of ‘Ganga Maiya ki Jai’ resound in the atmosphere. I feel a pinch in my heart, why does this have to happen to me again and again, somehow I console myself and move on... Time to get back home and plan another one of my yatras…

Chandi Devi and Mansa Devi Temples

There are two very famous Siddhapeeth Devi temples in Haridwar – Mansa devi Temple at the top of the Bilwa mountain and Chandi Devi Temple atop the Neel Mountain. Both of these are dedicated to different forms of Goddess Shakti (a form of Goddess Durga) and offer excellent views of the town as well as the valley.

A convenient way to reach them is through the Udan Khatola or cable cars for which you will have to pay a nominal amount of charge. Tickets are available at the base of the hill. Round trip tickets are cheaper than the single round fare. If you are planning to visit both the temples, then combo tickets are also available at the counters. However, alternatively one can even decide to walk all the way to the temples (approx 1-1.5 km trek distance).

Bhim Goda

Located in close proximity to the Har Ki Pauri Ghat in Haridwar, this tank bears significance from the Mahabharta period. It is said that while Pandavas were on their journey from Haridwar to the Himalayas, Pandava brother Bhim had made this tank with a single powerful blow of his knee. Inspite of the place having such a historic relevance, it is sad to see this place lying in a mismanaged and a poor shape today.

Associated with Lord Shiva, His consort Sati and Her father Daksh Prajapati, this temple also known as Daksheshwar Mahadeo Temple is a major historic spot in Kankhal, around 3 kms from Haridwar. This is the same place where Goddess Sati is believed to have immolated herself following an insult of Her Husband by none other than Her father Daksh Himself.

Haridwar situated on the right bank of the River Ganga is among the seven sacred cities of India. All journeys to the spiritual towns of Uttaranchal start from Haridwar which literally means the Gateway to God ('Hari' meaning God and 'dwar' meaning Gate). The city is a four hour journey on the well constructed highway from Delhi and 1 hr drive from Rishikesh. This is also the place where 'Amrit Kalash' or 'The Nectar of Immortality' is believed to have fallen thus making it one of the sites where one of the largest spiritual gathering – The Kumbh Mela – is held once after every 12 years.

The most striking aspect of this spiritually tinted town is that it leaves a unique impression on every pilgrim. For some it is a religious soul stirring expedition, others say it’s a tad too crowded and a bit contrived, some say it’s fascinating with all its mystical flavors and deep historical antiquity... For me, it's a town that has a magnetic pull, a town that is intriguingly charming, a town that is so very close to my heart...

Well, because no matter which part of the town I am in, it tells me a story that is deeply rooted in my ancestral history... Because almost every lane I walk into, I can see those priceless impressions of the footprints of my grandparents… Because every gully (alley) I turn into, it resonates with lovely memories of my dad’s childhood days that the place has so lovingly stacked up for me... Because; I love that glint in his eyes and the zest in his voice when he fondly narrates them all to me...

In the evening lights, the town looks like a jumble of colors – houses, shops, bazaars, snarling traffic and dhabas – all drenching you in a thick coat of religious fervor and enthusiasm.

Hundreds of shops selling souvenirs, sweets, food, music cassettes and CD’s, books and other religious paraphernalia were put up for sale. As we wandered down the meandering gullies (lanes) of the city along with the bustling crowd that was sifting around, we realized, that this place called the Bara Bazaar was not just a shopping place but also a tourist attraction.

There are lots of things that you can pick up from here like jholas (bags), beads, woolies, etc and expect some great bargains on them too but this is what we bought back home…

I like the buns here but their other offerings like bhatures, kulches and even chaval (rice), each served with hot and spicy chole (spicy chickpeas curry, a popular north Indian delicacy) are equally tempting. Also do not leave without gulping down the special tari (the gravy that floats atop the chole) at the end of your meal. And be sure to come here before 6 p.m. or the joint will be closed.

The kanji vadas soaked in tangy mustard flavoured water are good too...

Be very very careful with the beggars and the sadhus. Trust no one as there are many who are always on the lookout for ways to fleece the tourists. Auto rickshaws are available in plenty but the best way to explore the town is by cycle rickshaw or on foot.

Panch Prayags in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttaranchal - The Making of River Ganga

Along the Badrinath route, one comes across the 'five' sacred 'confluences' of the Ganges tributaries which, according to the Hindu tradition, are the revered locations reckoned highly auspicious for certain ritualistic ceremonies like shraddha, snan (holy dip), worship, etc.

It is said that when the most venerated of Indian rivers, the life-giving Goddess Ganga had come down on earth, Her current was so enormous that the Gods had to be summoned to avert a massive flood. As a remedy, the forceful River was divided into 12 streams to control Her power.

Today, the five important locations where some of these sibling streams unite to finally emerge as the single sedative holy stream of the Ganga is known as ‘PanchPrayag’ (Panch means five and Prayag refers to the confluence of two or more rivers).

The Five Confluences – The Panch Prayags

These confluences (as they appear on the Badrinath route from Rishikesh) are named as Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, NandPrayag and Vishnu Prayag and are together referred to as the ‘Panch Prayags’ of the Garhwal Himalayas. All of the five are situated in the state of Uttaranchal, the first three- Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag and Karnaprayag being in Chamoli district; Rudraprayag in the district of the same name, and Devprayag in Pauri Garhwal, on the border with Tehri Garhwal.

Although one comes across these revered confluences while also on the upward journey towards Badrinath, they are better understood in the descending order that is while coming down from Badrinath towards the plains, and hence I will describe it that way.

1. Vishnuprayag = Alaknanda + Dhauli Ganga

The journey starts from Badrinath where the melting ice of the Bhagirath Kharak and the Satopanth glacier give rise to the Alaknanda River. The River makes its way downwards thereon, to Vishnuprayag (approximately 5 km from Joshimath and 8 kms from Badrinath), the first of the five sacred prayags. Here the Alaknanda gently unites with the Dhauli Ganga in the shades of the bordering mountains and woods and continues its voyage ahead. Sage Narada is said to have worshipped Vishnu here. The place houses a small octagonal stone temple built by the Maharani of Indore - Queen Ahilyabai, in 1889 AD said to be the abode to a Shiva lingam.

2. Nandaprayag = Alakananda + Mandakini

Meandering its way downhill past dense forests, ancient temples and settlements, to the south-west of Vishnuprayag, River Alakananda pauses briefly again at Nandaprayag (190 kms short of Rishikesh on the Uttarkashi road) - the second of the five confluences - this time to tenderly cuddle along with Mandakini. The place is dedicated to Nand, the Yadav king and the famed foster father of Lord Krishna. He is said to have pleased Lord Vishnu with his devotion here and attained the boon to have a son like Vishnu himself. The confluence is marked by a temple dedicated to Gopalji, a form of Lord Krishna. The trek to Tapovan branches out from here via Kunwari pass.

3. Karnaprayag = Alaknanda + Pindar River

Further 21 km downstream, 170 kms from Rishikesh is the third prayag - Karnaprayag – the site where the Pindar River, rising from the Pindar glacier below the Nanda Devi hill range, surges into the Alaknanda. It is said that the tragic hero of the epic Mahabharat, Karna had acquired the shielding kawach kundals from His father, Surya here. Karnaprayag is marked by two temples - one dedicated to the goddess Uma, the daughter of the Himalayas and the other to Karna, after whom the township gets its name. It is also said that the last rites of Karna were performed here. Another significance is that Swami Vivekananda is also believed to have meditated here for eighteen days.

4. Rudraprayag = Alaknanda + Mandakini

Next in the series of confluences is Rudraprayag, 137 km short of Rishikesh, where the Alaknanda River once again unites with the Mandakini (a la Nandprayag as seen above). The confluence gets its name from ‘Rudra’, a form of Shiva who created the musical notes ‘Ragas & Raginis’ here which outline the basis of the Indian music to day.

It is also the place where Jim Corbett killed the famous man-eater leapord of ‘Rudraprayag’. A steep line of steps leads to the confluence point while ancient temples Rudranath and Chamunda Devi stand on the upper end of the steps. The road bifurcates here; one goes towards Kedarnath and the other proceeds to Badrinath via Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag and Vishnuprayag as described above.

5. Devprayag = Alaknanda + Bhagirathi = GANGA

And finally, 70 km from Rishikesh, one meets Devprayag - the last of the confluences. This is the place where Ganga, the life-giving goddess breathes life. The two holy rivers - the bluish-green rapid Bhagirathi, the chief stream of the Ganges unites with a calm but mucky Alaknanda and River Ganga is born.

It is the first prayag on the way to Badrinath and last while descending down from the same. It is home to the famous Raghunatha Math, also known as the Ram temple, as also to the priests of Badrinath in winter.

Thus,

Panch Prayag -----> VishnuPrayag -> Nandprayag -> Karnaprayag -> Rudraprayag -> Devprayag -> River GANGA

Shrouded in myths, legends and mysticism, all of these five prayags are considered to be almost as sacred, if not equivalent, to the famous Triveni Sangam confluence at Allahabad where the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers merge. No wonder then, the 'Panch Prayag' is, to any devout Hindu traveling to the Char Dhams in the Himalayas, certainly one of the things to look out for. Many pilgrims, in fact take a dip in the rivers at these locations before embarking on to visit the holy char dham circuit in the ‘Dev Bhumi’ (God's land) as Uttarakhand is commonly known.

People of Garhwal, in particular, gather at the five prayags during Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan, Basant Panchami and Ram Navami festivals for a holy dip in the sacred river confluences. We could, however, just manage stopping at these places for a while to contemplate on the significance of the spot, admire the awesome scenery, and could never actually go down at the sangam or offer prayers at the local temple.

Ganpati Visarjan - Lord Ganesha's Journey Back Home

11th September, 2011 - Ananth Chaturdashi (11th day of the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival):

These few lines in Marathi, very pertinently describe the feel in the atmosphere today.

After 10 days of fanfare and merrymaking, the time has come to see off our very dear friend Lord Ganesha. Lacs of idols all across the city will be immersed in sea, artificial lakes and ponds as HE returns to His heavenly abode. Though the mood is a bit somber but He is given a grand farewell… Amid musical beats of drums and loud chants, thus begins His journey back home…

He is taken in trucks, cars, carts, on top of heads or held in hands for the visarjan towards the water body

He is pampered as devotees surround him for the final prayers,
sing artis (hymns) and let out loud chants before bidding him adieu

He keeps hold of all the focus, everything else is just that... a blur!

In all these days gone by,

everyone has formed an individual bond with the Lord,

and for many it’s not that easy to let it go loose…

He gets in line with His other Siblings
before He can start His journey back home

All His religious belongings like garlands

and other spiritual paraphernalia are removed

Devotees look on as their Beloved gets ready to slowly blend with water

The kids look on too grabbing hold onto their balcony seats

And eventually, He departs vanishing out of everyone's sight...

As one looks at these scenes pass by, hearts are warm and eyes moist... the mind can’t help but roll back to the festivities of the days gone by – The Ganpati Pandal Hopping, darshan of the Lalbaugcha Raja or the different Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations cutting across boundaries – …and tries to hold all of them tight... but the more it tries to do so, the faster they keep slipping by, ultimately evaporating into a huge void…

He has finally departed but... not before teaching us a lesson of detachment, not before leaving behind His blessings for all, not before whispering a soft promise in our ears, a promise of coming back soon next year... Then, the city will be full of life once again and dance away to His festive tunes, and things will pick up right from the very point they have become blurry…

Till then, however, let's all say it loud and clear... for one last time... zor se bolo –

Though I love meeting Lord Ganesha at the various Ganpati Pandals during the Ganesotsav festival, somehow the most famous Ganpati of Mumbai, the Lalbaugcha Raja has always eluded me. But this year, for the very first time in my life, I finally managed to fix an appointment with the Emperor of Mumbai – Lalbaugcha Raja and got His blessings at last!

9th September : This friday was special… very special to me! I was on a special journey, a journey to meet the royal ruler before He departs to His abode…

It’s 7.00 AM and shops are still closed. Day in His Kingdom is yet to begin… For a town that never sleeps (The Pandal is open 24*7 on all festival days), this indeed comes as a surprise…

As I walk towards the Pandal, I understand He is not only a king, but also the current hot favorite Superstar featured in the various billboard ad campaigns lining up the way to the Pandal…

All roads seem to be leading up to Him, everyone seems to be heading in one single direction, with one common goal…

After a few min walk, the palace comes in view… the big gates luring me in… I find a certain sense of anxiousness and anxiety gripping me tight…

There is a certain magic in the air, a certain madness, and I join in the frenzy…

Once in, the overpowering sense of crowds suddenly seem to evaporate and you become a part of them; everyone becomes one in the core basic thought and what exists now is no individual entity but just one big mass of humanity!

‘Bagha Bagha! Lalbaghcha Raja Disto Aahe!’ (Look! The Lord is now visible! ) It’s just 20 min or so in the queue… A glimpse so soon, How? I wonder. But a single step forward, a slight curve in the queue and yes, its indeed Him!

Within a few minutes, digicams, mobile cams are out and people hamper scamper to freeze and capture Him in the best possible way they can…

A few more min and little do I know, but I am standing right in front of HIM! He welcomes me personally with a warm smile …?!… It’s thrilling! He sits on His majestic throne sparkling, gleaming… radiating an aura that’s much more than just mesmerizing, hipnotizing or any other similar adjective that I can think of…

Who says Lalbaugcha raja is one of the largest 'idols' in Mumbai, I disagree! The Lord is not only an 'idol' but very much alive here… and it’s the incredible power of the engaged faith and reverence of millions and millions over the years that has breathed life in Him… you just need to hold those cords of conviction taut, stay true to your beliefs and then feel His Presence…

Outside the pandal, after the coveted 'darshan', a sense of satisfaction and content lingers on and the atmosphere is very much relaxed… People revel in the bliss of pleasure and happiness and take back with them sacred marks of their Beloved BAPPA…

Today is the last day of the festival, the Ganesh Visarjan day… And as I write this post, the final procession of the Lalbaugcha Raja is already underway from Lalbaug and will reach Chowpatty the next morning.

1. There are two lines for the darshan. The Mukhdarshan line is the one in which you only get to see Him from a distance and moves much faster than its counterpart, called the Navsaachi Rang or Mannatwali Line. The wait in this latter queue can extend to as long as upto 20 hrs. We opted for the former and it took us just about 40 minutes to reach Lord Ganesha.

2. It is among the city's richest mandals and each year a huge amount is received in the form of donations. This year, the total collection during Ganeshotsav has been around 6 crores.

How to Reach Lalbaugcha Raja -

The nearest station to Lalbaugcha Raja on the western railway lines is Lower Parel. On the central route, you will need to alight at the Currey road railway station. It is a 10-15 min walkable distance from both these stations.
